Mientras leía "Anatomy of the English-Only Movement" empece a pensar que el idioma causa muchas divisiones. Aunque es una forma de comunicación que nos junta, también suele ser muy problematica. Por alguna razón, se me vino a la mente una parte de la Biblia sobre el idioma. Ahora, yo soy Católica pero no diría que soy SUPER religiosa. De hecho, no es normal para mi que de pronto se me venga a la menta un pasaje de la Biblia, pero esta vez me acorde de la dispersion de esto:
Gen 11:1-9 The Dispersion of the Nations at Babel
The whole earth had a common language and a common vocabulary. (v.2) When the people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. (v.3) Then they said to one another, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." (They had brick instead of stone and tar instead of mortar.) (v.4) Then they said, "Come, let's build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens so that we may make a name [BBE: "a great name"] for ourselves. Otherwise we will be scattered across the face of the entire earth." (v.5) But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the people had started building. (v.6) And the LORD said, "If as one people all sharing a common language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be beyond them. (v.7) Come, let's go down and confuse their language so they won't be able to understand each other." (v.8) So the LORD scattered them from there across the face of the entire earth, and they stopped building the city. (v.9) That is why its name was called Babel - because there the LORD confused the language of the entire world, and from there the LORD scattered them across the face of the entire earth.
Me pareció interesante el origen de los diferentes idiomas según esa cita. Ahora estamos viendo la hispanofobia y otras formas de discriminación por el hecho de hablar diferentes idiomas. Es, entonces, el propósito del idioma dividir? Que piensan ustedes?
Por sea caso, no es mi intención ofender a ninguna persona con el uso de este pasaje, solo me pareció interesante y relevante.
Andrea, no soy nada de religiosa pero me crié cristiana, entonces la historia de Babel también es algo de que tengo conocimiento. Como tú, estaba pensando en ella al leer la lectura porque, aunque haya rechazado la religión, los “mitos” todavía me parecen interesantes. Uno no tiene que ser experto en la antropología para entender que es algo sumamente humano crear historias que explican nuestra existencia. La historia de Babel me parece una alegoría hermosa por la condición humana y por el racismo y las divisiones que se encuentran a través del mundo por causa de diferencias de lengua. Verdadera o no, el dios de la historia sabía exactamente lo que hacía porque los problemas que causó la invención de múltiples idiomas persisten después de miles y miles de años.
